As a web designer, one must consider the significance of choosing the right fonts and text styles that will be applied to the website. Fonts are as important as the user interface, colors, and pictures added in the page. A website is not all about images and pictures, buttons, and moving descriptions: typography is.

Typography is defined as the design and use of letters as a form of communication, with it, it is crucial to select the suitable font styles to be part of the page. Therefore a good web page designer must be equipped with sufficient knowledge of typography basics in the concept of web design.

Web Design Typography

There are many facets of typography in web design. First is the style of the font, there are two basic styles of font that can be selected for the webpage: the serif style and the sans serif style. The serif style is the type of in which there is lines and strokes at the end of the letters, while the sans serif style is without extra embellishments, and is strictly formal.

  • Typography plays an important role in web design; considering the theme and concentration of the webpage. The well known fonts most web designers and managers choose are: Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana, and Courier.
  • Selecting the proper font size in the webpage is important. Correct size means it is readable and the typography dimension is fitted to accommodate the screen resolution of the monitor. Fonts present in the page must be versatile and adaptable with any monitor size.
  • Typography and information dissemination in the webpage should be coordinated with each other. Almost 95 per cent of information is distributed in the website, paragraph arrangement is also considered. In addition, arranging the information into chunks is very important. Proper distribution of paragraphs and fonts in the webpage can boost understanding about the essence of the webpage.
  • Font spacing is another vital concept of web design typeface; it enhances the overall consistency and legibility of the letters. As well, the normal spacing for webpage is 1.0 to 1.5. In addition, spacing creates focused attention from the reader, so don’t be afraid to add spacing to the website, it helps.
  • Fonts can be manipulated through the programming language, as well as the colors, proportions and dimensions. Furthermore, the ability to control the fonts in the website, when properly done, can help increase traffic and visitors from the Internet.
  • Additionally, accurate margin setting is considered to be another concept of web design to be equally important and can be maximized with the correct adjustments. Margins are helpful in separating the typeface or fonts from the overall webpage designs such as buttons and images.

These are not rules – but rather guidelines.  With a good set of typography implemented in the webpage, and is arranged according to the theme or design, most likely it will generate high traffic and visibility.
